Leave your unwashed laundry/clothes out in front of your home - this will create a concentrated scent that your dog can possibly pick up and follow if they are in the area. I heard that hanging dirty socks 18 inches off the ground is the most effective. Concentrate the scent in a specific place so that it is strong and carries through the air. Do this, along with leaving a bowl of water and some of your dog's bedding out in front of your home. Dogs have a powerful sense of smells, so creating a beacon of scent can be the thing that guides your dog back to you. Microchip: - If your dog is microchipped, then immediately contact the microchip company to report them lost and confirm or update your contact info. - Go to aaha.org and click ‘Microchip Lookup’ at the top of the page, then type in the microchip number you have for your dog, to check if it is registered in any of the microchip registries. - If no results appear under ‘Microchip enrolled with,’ then it is very important that you do enroll the numbers asap, so that if someone finds your dog and takes him to a Vet’s office or animal shelter where he will be scanned for the chip, the numbers will for sure be in the system, allowing for you to be contacted. - There are many registries you can choose from for enrolling microchip numbers, here are a few I recommend: akcreunite.org, peeva.co, internationalpetregistry.com. All of these enrollments entail a one-time expense of around $30-45, but it is well worth it. A bonus of akcreunite.org is that it comes with a lost pet alert feature which will help you spread the word further. See full comment
