@ Merrie: Please follow these 3 things right now, then read the linked articles: 1) overnight - crack the escape point open. Most of these cats will attempt to come back in on their own, even if it's not the first or second night....and more times than not, late at night/early am. It's something all cats are absolutely born with - the ability to come back to the territory of "home" and via the escape point. Most owners don't actually know (and erroneously believing their cat is "lost"), and when the cat tries coming back after enough fear has subsided, the opening is closed - and they may only try it a few times. If you have other pets, contain them overnight in a bedroom for example. 2) Almost all completely indoor-only cats upon escaping are suddenly overwhelmed with fear and will run a short distance and hide. They will NOT "roam" like dogs do and are going to be in "survival mode" - staying put. This state of mind comes about as cats - being very territorial and used to their environment - are now "isolated" on the outside. They are almost always VERY close even if it's just on the next door neighbor's property....but more times than not, it's actually on your own property like under your house or car or outbuilding, etc....big or small - anything that they can get into or under, crawl IN or UNDER that's very close by. This particular state of mind has a paralyzing effect and cats don't want to move hence cne out from hiding. But this is good and can be used to recover them by searching correctly. *Note - if you live in an apt complex it's exactly the same except they may run a little further to find a hiding place. *many of these cats will not respond to you calling them, so look thoroughly in every single place you look - especially in the immediate area. And if you do call - use a very "normal voice" like nothing ever happened....especially if you find him/her while looking. They're already very apprehensive and can bolt out running further away if spooked anymore. So just call your cat in an "everyday voice". 3) NO litter box!! Many ppl insist on doing this old wives tale but just leave it inside and read my artical on it to understand exactly why its a terrible idea AND to learn WHY your cat isn't lost to begin with. *And I absolutely DO NOT recommend putting out food for these cats, as their primary goal - once the fear subsides enough, is to come back inside....plus it attracts other cats/animals when you're escaped cat is already extremely fearful right now. *Also no need for a scent trail. I am saying that because an escaped indoor-only cat is NOT lost and is in hiding....plus cats are not dogs and do not need scent to remember where they were! Follow those 3 things right now, then follow up with my linked article which explains this more thoroughly. No use of litter box: Completely Indoor-only: NOTE: I am not interested in a reward if one is bring offered. And you can always ask me questions. I understand cat behavior and enjoy helping....however, it's more up to you to keep me updated. Those who stay in touch with me - especially early on - have the best chance of locating and recovering their missing cat(s). I help ppl everyday and the sheer volume of missing cats is more than enough to keep 1 person extremely occupied. So keeping in touch is something worth doing as I can't go back and check on every single person I initially communicate with each day. *note: many times on fb, the notifications do not come through!! So feel free to message me on Messenger as well.
