Found location is the Walgreens Drug Store on the corner of Hawthorne Street and Route 301 in Laplata. Dog was seen around 7:30 PM crossing the street without any owner and was captured by some teenagers. She appears to be a young German Shepherd who was confused and scared, constantly looking for someone she knew. Very friendly and sweet, she was wearing a separate collar and harness with leash attached. The dog may have been exposed to the rain or when moving dragged her leash through rain puddles as the leash was soaked. Her harness had frayed straps suggesting that she had worn it for some time and its condition perhaps pointed to the dog being strong and active. We took custody of the dog, had announcements made at the surrounding stores, and when no one appeared to claim the dog contacted the Charles County Sheriffs Department. We also were able to gain the confidence of her enough to have her in the back seat of our car while we awaited the arrival of the Animal Control van. The dog settled down somewhat in the back of our car, giving us face kisses at times and when turned over to the Animal Control warden was very cooperative being leashed and put into the animal crate in the van, willingly going into the vehicle. The warden advised she would deliver the dog to the Charles County Animal Shelter (telephone #301-932-1713). We were provided a form to sign by the animal warden documenting recovery of the dog and told she would be processed today (Sunday, 12 May). There was no tag or other identifying information on the dog’s collar or harness. She will be checked for a microchipped, held as a stray for return and release to her owner, and if not claimed in three days be listed for adoption. Interested parties may inquire about her at the animal shelter by asking for information regarding profile/case number 7532. We would have taken her home if not for having two dogs ourselves.
